Environmental concerns should not be overlooked, it plays such a pivotal role in every aspect of our lives as Albert Einstein stated “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” A wonderful young, South African lady, Courtney, has noticed the value our environment plays and has already made incredible achievements in this sphere. As the youth in South Africa we have countless opportunities to make a change and raise awareness with our rich biodiversity right on our doorstep,  we need only to drive ourselves with a sense of passion and determination to achieve great things.

Here’s more about Courtney and her environmentalist work…

“My name is Courtney Gehle and I am currently studying towards a BSc Geography at the University of Pretoria. I am a passionate person and I subscribe to the labels of activist, feminist, environmentalist and occasionally, chocoholic.

I co-founded an environmental organisation called The Greenline, which works to create awareness about and take action on environmental issues in the Pretoria area. My greatest achievement is representing South Africa at the international climate change negotiations in Paris at the end of last year and being chosen as 1 of 8 people from across the world selected to draft the Youth Resolution on climate change used by world leaders in the negotiations. Coming a pretty close second in being selected for a U.S Government Student Leaders exchange programme and having the opportunity to see President Obama speak live.

People often ask why I do what I do, or where I get the time or the energy. My answer is because I love it! I get to do what I love every single day and I am so fortunate to be able to do so. I love working with people, organising projects or events and making a difference.     At the end of my first year at university someone asked me “What is the meaning of life?” and it has taken me two years to figure it out. Life is not, as we have been taught, about making money to buy things we are told we need -life is about making a difference in the lives of others and this is why I find the energy and make the time.

I wake up excited and go to sleep fulfilled. People ask me how I have accomplished so much and I always say: incredible things happen when you do what you love. It is my sincere hope that people will find the courage to follow their passions and live out their dreams.”
