“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”
Female empowerment – it’s not being anti male, it’s allowing the voices of women to be heard and their opinions and views to not be overlooked, allowing women confidence in their own capacities.
We are continually bombarded with stories of horrific violations to females – women, young and old, being taken advantage of and continually being sexually assaulted – the statistics of female rape and abuse in South Africa alone are frightening and should not be overlooked. Focusing however, singularly on these statistics will quickly drive one to depression. A great number of female’s are however voicing these concerns, their activism is on the rise, doing something positive despite the obstacles they may face, staying true to their beliefs. Amidst these women we find the likes of Colette, a young lady who is not afraid to take a stand and promote positive change in our society.
Colette Butler (20) 2nd year law student.
“I am a passionate feminist and believe in re-educating young people about their misconceptions of sex, consent and gender roles. Although I’ve always felt strongly about consent and gender equality, I only recently decided to stand up and be vocal about my beliefs. In the past I had never been taken seriously, but I decided that the worst thing I could do is silence myself for fear of what people would think of me; a quote that reminded my of this is…
“The cost of not following your heart, is spending the rest of your life wishing you had”.
The enormous positive response I received about my ask first post has inspired me to pursue my goal of raising awareness about the importance of consent and sex-positivity.”
